The Meadow Portland

About Us

The Meadow is a place where the beautiful, the delicious, and the unexpected are brought together for your pleasure. We specialize in artisan salt, the world’s great chocolate bars, bitters and other gourmet items for the bar and kitchen, and in Portland, carry a close selection of Oregon and European wines and vermouths. The Meadow also offers full service floristry, and the air is suffused in the aromas and colors of fresh cut flowers arranged with imagination and a love of nature. Business is intensely personal, a creative and ever-challenging way to connect with, learn about, and go places with people. With a close selection of books on food and culture, curated works of art, and a few comfortable chairs set by the window, The Meadow is a place where you can step outside of time for a moment, linger, and let your mind wander.

The Meadow was founded in the spring of 2006 out of shared love of food and travel. In the fall of 2010 we opened a second store in the West Village of New York City.

About Our Products

Salt, the most ancient ingredient, surpasses even fire in its power to enhance the flavors of food. The Meadow has collected the finest, most beguiling, and most effective varieties—each with its own special mineral and crystal properties—to bring newfound pleasure and beauty to your table. The Meadow’s selection of more than 110 sea salts and quarried salts from over 26 different countries captures the immeasurable diversity and richness of our culinary traditions, making them a prism through which our world can be seen in all its variegated and changing beauty. This may sound like hyperbole, but sprinkle the parchment fine crystals of a good flake sea salt on home-grown butterleaf lettuce dressed in macerated shallot vinaigrette and you will experience a chlorophyll dynamo of flavor that seems to strum at the very heart of nature. Salt sates the Alchemist’s desire, transmuting food to fantasy.

Our approach to chocolate is the that of a wine lover: we’ve painstakingly collected more than 300 varieties of the world’s finest chocolate bars and arranged them into basic categories on our shelves. The focus is on dark chocolate bars, and some of the world's most renowned chocolate makers are represented. A smaller but still expansive selection of milk and flavored chocolates is also present. Our focus on the chocolate bar still leaves us with a little room for a smalls selection of the very best truffles and other confections. Tying in to our interest in salt, we carry an extensive collection of salted caramels, salted chocolates, and other salted confections. Of course, we also cannot overlook European-style drinking chocolates and a few examples of the best hot cocoas, couverture, cocoa powder, cacao beans, nibs, and other chocolate basics.

The wine selection at The Meadow in Portland strays from the more popular labels and, instead reflects our personal, passionate love of wine. (New York liquor laws forbid wine sales from our Manhattan shop!) While some of Oregon’s most exciting Pinot noirs are represented, small producers from France, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Portugal make up the heart of the inventory. The Meadow’s exploration of essential but often-overlooked wines extends to Aperitifs such as Pinot de Charentes, digestifs such as Banyuls, ice wines, Ports, and Vin Santos, and Cavas. And we are fanatics of grower Champagnes.... Our Portland Store We have expanded to carry on of the most extensive selections of craft-made Vermouths in the region. Both our New York and Portland locations boast more than 110 varieties of artisan cocktail bitters, one of most extensive collections available.

Flowers are everywhere at The Meadow, making it a place where the elemental forces are combined to bring man, nature, and art together. Arranged in vintage vases, fine glassworks, and tin buckets, local and imported flowers of every stripe are arranged in profusion, filling the air with fragrance, commingling with the old wood, the salt, the chocolate, the bottles of wine opened for tasting. From the bench at the back of the store, The Meadow offers floral design services, cut flowers by the bucket, and flower delivery.

To complete your table, The Meadow carries a vast selection of Peugeot salt and pepper mills, Grind spring mills, and a researched selection of other useful, decorative, and useful accessories.

Events at The Meadow can be custom tailored for private occasions, and every month The Meadow hosts tastings that range from an exploration of new chocolates to classes on the effective use of salts on food, accompanied by flights of wine.
